What are PFAS Chemicals?

PFAS chemicals are substances that are not naturally occurring and that essentially do not degrade naturally, which is why they are also called “forever chemicals.” PFAS chemicals are used mostly in industrial, agricultural, and commercial applications, such as product manufacturing, which is why so many household products contain PFAS chemicals.

Nonindustrial products that contain PFAS and that might be linked to exposure include:

  • Nonstick cookware like Teflon-coated pans
  • Water-repellant clothing and furniture
  • Certain household cleaning products
  • Certain cosmetic products

Many high-grade fire extinguishers used on military bases and in industrial factories use PFAS to suffocate fires, too.

Who Has Been Exposed to PFAS?

You might have been exposed to PFAS if you have been employed as a:

  • Chemical plant worker
  • Manufacturing plant worker
  • Firefighter
  • Environmental cleanup worker
  • Military service member

Furthermore, widespread PFAS exposure has been linked to groundwater contamination caused by various manufacturing methods and agricultural applications. When PFAS chemicals are disposed of during an industrial process, after putting out a chemical fire, or while certain fertilizers are used on crops, PFAS can seep into the soil. After months or years, it can reach underlying sources of groundwater, contaminating the entire source. For this reason, anyone who lives near where PFAS chemicals are used could be exposed to dangerous levels of these unsafe substances. In 2024, residents of Johnson County, Texas, were shocked by a report that said they had been exposed to PFAS levels that were several hundred times higher than the Environmental Protection Agency’s safe drinking water limits, which was traced to groundwater contamination through agricultural processes nearby.

Time spent on many military bases has also been linked to unsafe PFAS exposure through the use of Aqueous Film Forming Form (AFFF) there. Anyone who served in the military, especially someone who acted in a military fire brigade like an Army Firefighter, might have been exposed to PFAS at unsafe levels.

Harm Caused by PFAS Exposure

Repeated or heavy exposure to PFAS chemicals has been linked to a variety of severe health conditions, including:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Kidney failure
  • Leukemia
  • Liver damage
  • Thyroid disease
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

PFAS exposure has also been linked to many types of cancer, such as:

  • Kidney
  • Bladder
  • Prostate
  • Liver
  • Breast
  • Colorectal
  • Testicular
  • Pancreatic

If PFAS exposure originates from contaminated groundwater that gets into drinking water sources, the first warning signs or symptoms might be throat irritation or pain while swallowing. Please speak to a medical provider if you have started to feel unexplained throat pain, especially if you think you live near where PFAS chemicals are used in manufacturing, industrial processes, or agricultural applications like biosolid fertilizer.

Who is Liable for PFAS Exposure?

Currently, the focus of PFAS litigation has mostly been placed on three prominent manufacturers:

  1. 3M
  2. Chemours
  3. DuPont

The three companies listed are the largest PFAS manufacturers in the country. However, several other companies have also been implicated and named in legal action. For example, an agricultural company could be liable for misusing fertilizers that cause PFAS to contaminate local water sources.

PFAS lawsuits filed against these corporations accuse them of failing to properly research and market their PFAS-based products. Complaints also state that PFAS manufacturers have failed to properly dispose of these chemicals, leading to untold environmental damage and contamination that puts countless people at risk of unsafe levels of PFAS exposure.

Can You File a PFAS Contamination Lawsuit?

You may be eligible to file a PFAS lawsuit if:

  • You consumed PFAS-contaminated water; or,
  • You work with PFAS chemicals and products; or,
  • You live near where PFAS chemicals are manufactured or used.

Although many household products contain PFAS, like nonstick cookware and water-repellant clothing, the link between using these products and serious health conditions is still being studied. For this reason, our legal team is focusing our efforts on PFAS exposure lawsuits that involve at least one of the above factors, especially water contamination cases, which are among the most common and tend to affect a large number of people at once.
