Do You Qualify to File a Hair Relaxer Lawsuit?

You may be eligible to file a hair relaxer lawsuit if:

  • You used a chemical hair straightening/relaxing product for 5 or more years;
  • You used a chemical hair straightening/relaxing product 4 or more times, especially if used consistently; and,
  • You have been diagnosed with uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, or endometrial cancer.

It is important to emphasize that you must have received a diagnosis of uterine, ovarian, or endometrial cancer to qualify as a hair relaxer lawsuit claimant. If you have not been diagnosed with one of those types of cancers, you likely cannot file a claim, even if you have been diagnosed with a different type of cancer.

Chemical Hair Relaxers Linked to Cancer

Hair relaxer products use several chemicals to straighten hair follicles. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned that many of those chemicals could be dangerous through repeated skin exposure and has gone as far as to propose a ban on chemical hair straighteners and relaxers.

Potentially dangerous chemicals used in hair relaxer products include:

  • Formaldehyde: Known carcinogen that can be produced in even “formaldehyde-free” hair relaxers once the product is heated.
  • Phthalates: Endocrine disruptor that is considered a “probable carcinogen” by the National Cancer Institute.
  • Guanidine: Harmful chemical substance capable of causing skin damage, which furthers the skin absorption rate of other hair relaxer chemicals.
  • Sodium hydroxide: Alkali substance that has also been linked to skin damage and even hair loss with repeated use.

With repeated exposure to these chemicals, hair relaxer users may experience a higher risk of certain types of cancers. To date, the most common and dangerous forms of cancers linked to hair relaxers are uterine, ovarian, and endometrial. Again, if you have used a hair relaxer product repeatedly – or at least four times – and were diagnosed with one of these types of cancers, call (361) 882-1612 to see if you can file a lawsuit in pursuit of fair compensation.

Science Shows Link Between Hair Relaxers & Cancer

Recently, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published an in-depth study aimed to clarify the link between certain forms of cancer and chemical hair relaxer product use. Researchers used information from more than 33,000 women, including more than a decade’s worth of reports and testimonies that detailed their serious health issues like cancer. The American Cancer Society also conducted a similar large-scale study.

Based on the results of these studies, it has been concluded that:

  • Women who have sometimes used chemical hair relaxers were around 200% more likely to develop uterine cancer than women who did not use those products.
  • Women who have frequently used chemical hair relaxers – meaning around four times a year – were 250% to 400% more likely to develop uterine cancer.
  • Overall, about 1.6% of women who did not use chemical hair relaxers are eventually diagnosed with uterine cancer but about 4.1% of women who do use chemical hair relaxers will be.
  • Approximately 60% of women who frequently used chemical hair relaxers self-identified in the studies as Black; chemical hair relaxers are predominantly marketed to and used by Black women.
  • Women who used hair products other than chemical hair relaxers had no noticeable increase in cancer risks.
