Advocating for Victims of Gun Violence
Hilliard Law has fought against gun violence, representing victims of the deadly November 5, 2017, Sutherland Springs, Texas shooting, at the First Baptist Church. The attack was Texas’ deadliest shooting and the fifth-deadliest mass shooting in the United States. Hilliard Law attorney Bob Hilliard represented Ryland Ward, a 5-year-old boy, who sustained life-altering injuries in the shooting, as well as his mother, Chancie McMahan. They also represented Scott Holcombe, who lost seven family members including his mother, during the rampage. Hilliard Law attorneys not only sought recovery for the victims, but also enforcement of existing laws to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.
Fighting for Freedom
Hilliard Law fights for international human rights. In August 2020, Paul Rusesabagina, the man portrayed as a hero in the Academy Award-nominated movie Hotel Rwanda, was taken against his will to Rwanda and charged with terrorism, murder, and other crimes. Rusesabagina boarded a GainJet plane believing he was going to Burundi. Instead, GainJet took him to the Rwandan capital, Kigali. In partnership with Rusesabagina’s family and international human rights groups, Bob Hilliard agreed to join Mr. Rusesabagina’s legal team. In December 2020, Hilliard and the legal team filed an action against GainJet, alleging that Rusesabagina was kidnapped and flown to Rwanda without due process.
Battling Institutional Racism
Hilliard Law has also taken on systemic racism by fighting discrimination in the banking industry. Hilliard Law recently won a large settlement against a financial institution that imposed unreasonable standards on its Black customers. The sizable settlement marked a victory against the widespread, racist phenomenon known as “Banking while Black.” The settlement provided funds to the victims of discrimination in the bank industry. It also required the banks to agree to policy changes and education – the first steps to eradicating systemic racism.
Standing Up for Danny Ray Thomas
Danny Ray Thomas was unarmed and clearly in mental distress when a Harris County (Houston) deputy shot and killed him just moments after arriving on the scene. Bob Hilliard joined forces with renowned civil rights attorney, Ben Crump, to file a lawsuit on behalf of Mr. Thomas’s family, holding the county and the officer responsible for the wrongful death.
Stopping U.S. Border Patrol’s Unwarranted Deadly Force
Unarmed and standing on Mexican soil, 15-year-old Sergio Hernandez was shot to death by a U.S. Border Patrol agent. Our team took the case to the U.S. Supreme Court to argue for Constitutional protection of noncitizens on foreign soil.
Freeing an Innocent Vietnamese Refugee from Prison
Koua Fong Lee was imprisoned for criminal vehicular homicide, but we proved that acceleration defects in Lee’s Toyota caused the accident. Mr. Lee was freed. The Innocence Project of Minnesota honored founding partner Bob Hilliard with their first “Never Forgotten Award.”
Standing with Orlando’s Grieving Families
In the wake of the horrific June 12, 2016 shootings in Orlando, attorneys from Hilliard Law represented the families of victims, filing a lawsuit against the gun makers that manufactured and marketed the military-style weapons used by the shooter.
