With how often we hear about personal injury claims and lawsuits in the news, many of which can be quite shocking or groundbreaking, it is sometimes easy to see these stories as just that: personal injury cases or maybe just headlines. Of course, the truth is that behind every personal injury case, claim, or lawsuit, there is a real person who was harmed by someone else’s mistake, didn’t know what to do at first, and sought the help of a personal injury attorney.
At Hilliard Law, we take real pride in not just our long history of successful case results but also in the genuine human connection we make with every client. No one who comes to our Texas law office is ever seen as just a case number or headline. We make a point to see every client as a real person and a friend in need because our work isn’t just about case results, it’s also about really being there for someone when it might feel like no one else is.
To share only a few of the ways we have been there to help real people in real need after an accident or injury, we’d like to summarize some of our biggest and most significant case results in recent years, such as:
• $575 million (aggregate) settlement: General Motors (GM) sold thousands of vehicles with dangerously defective ignition switches and even took steps to conceal important information about their vehicles’ safety defects. As a result, numerous people lost their lives or suffered severe burns when those ignition switch defects caused several cars to burst into flames. Hilliard Law proudly fought for the families affected by this unacceptable example of product manufacturer wrongdoing and ultimately secured a $575 aggregate settlement for multiple clients. This multi-district litigation (MDL) is considered the single largest product liability litigation in US history.
• $50 million (aggregate) settlement: H&R Block had defrauded approximately 300,000 people through its rapid refund program, as well as by failing to disclose that it was receiving kickbacks for arranging loans between its clients and predatory lenders. Attorney Robert Hilliard proudly took the lead for this class action lawsuit and even acted as the lead class counsel, which resulted in a $50 million aggregate settlement.
• $50 million settlement: A Texan father of four was waiting to take a left-hand turn when an 18-wheeler driver tried to pass him in a no-passing zone. The big rig slammed into the back of his vehicle, causing it to immediately catch fire. He suffered extensive burns and full-body paralysis and required four months of hospitalization but ultimately passed away from complications. His family was emotionally and financially devastated by his abrupt passing. Hilliard Law was able to close this wrongful death case with a $50 million settlement.
• $33 million verdict: When a golf cart tipped over, it caused a young child to suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Our trial team took the case and brought the company that manufactured the golf cart to court. The case ended with a $33 million verdict due to the permanent, life-changing consequences of the injury.
• $30 million verdict: We were called upon to handle a lawsuit that went to trial after an ATV accident resulted in a client’s fatal injuries. The jury determined that both the design and the marketing of the ATV were defective and the proximate cause of the client’s death.
• $25 million verdict: A security guard in Downtown Corpus Christi suffered severe injuries when he was assaulted at work. Attorney Hilliard acted as the lead trial attorney in this case, which argued that premises liability issues contributed to the incident. The jury returned a $25 million judgment, which was the largest premises liability verdict in Texas for 2013.
• $21.5 million verdict: An employee for Coca-Cola was driving while talking on the cell phone. Due to the distraction, she crashed into our client, who suffered a severe back injury that required surgery. The case, led by Attorney Hilliard, went to trial in 2012 because the defendant would not offer a fair settlement amount that reflected the extent of our client’s life-changing injuries. Jurors sided with Attorney Hilliard’s arguments and returned with a $21.5 million verdict in this distracted driving case.
Of course, the above case results are only a few of the many that we have achieved for our personal injury clients throughout the decades. Also, we see every single case and result as important as the next because every client’s health and happiness are hugely important to our team. Whether we are fighting for $10,000 or $10,000,000, we always give each case our all.
