Hilliard Law Joins 806 Law Firms in Amicus Brief Defending the Independence of the Legal Profession

|

Friends,

Last week, Hilliard Law, alongside our colleagues at Hilliard Shadowen, stood with 806 other law firms across the country in a powerful act of solidarity and resistance.

We’ve jointly submitted amicus curiae briefs in support of the plaintiffs in two critical cases that challenge the Trump Administration’s unprecedented attempt to punish and intimidate law firms it perceives as political threats.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t just about politics—it’s about principle. Lawyers must be able to do their job and stand up for their clients without fearing punishment from the government. Anything less is a threat to justice and the rule of law.

In the face of this pressure, the firms of Wilmer Cutler and Jenner & Block, along with hundreds of law firms around the country, are refusing to bend - standing firm and resolute in defending the rule of law.

Crafted by former U.S. Solicitor General Don Verrilli and renowned litigator Nate Eimer, the briefs send a clear message: the legal profession will not be bullied. Our participation alongside firms we often face off against in court underscores a deeper truth—we may argue in adversarial arenas, but when it comes to defending the independence of our profession, we are united.

Partner Ben O’Connor remarked, “Our firm and the American legal profession are based on the bedrock principle that all persons are equally entitled to vindicate and defend their rights in court. The adversarial system depends on advocates unfettered by external influences and driven solely by representing their clients with the expectation of being fairly heard. When lawyers lose this capacity, the system suffers—perhaps irreparably. We are honored to stand alongside so many firms across the country, including those that we have worked with and, in this circumstance even more importantly, those we have worked against, in defense of these principles. Our legal system proves that disagreement is a means to reaching truth. And truth is something no lawyer should fear.”

At Hilliard Law, we believe in showing up. In speaking out. In doing what’s right, not just what’s easy. We’re proud to be on the right side of this fight—for our clients, for our colleagues, and for the country we all serve.

When democracy is tested, courage is required. Count on us to rise to the occasion.

— Hilliard Law
