During a time meant for celebration at the island’s Cultural Day Festival, a partial collapse of the ferry dock’s gangway plunged dozens of people into the water, leaving at least seven dead and six critically injured. Many of those lost were elderly members of the community, with the oldest victim being 93 years old.
As authorities continue to investigate the cause of this catastrophic failure, questions remain about how this preventable accident occurred. The gangway was inspected as recently as December 2023, and there are concerns regarding whether all safety protocols were followed.
