1. Move Your Motorcycle to a Safe Area
The first thing to do if you’ve been in a motorcycle accident is to move your motorcycle, if possible, to the shoulder of the road or anywhere that is safe and away from traffic. Shift your gear to park, place the kickstand (or lay down your bike if the kickstand gets destroyed in the accident), turn off the engine, and stand or sit near your motorcycle to take a moment to breathe. If your motorcycle gets completely destroyed, if possible, walk to the shoulder of the road to avoid oncoming traffic.
2. Check on Others Involved
Once your motorcycle is parked and you are safely away from traffic, check on everybody who was involved in the accident. This includes drivers, passengers, and pedestrians that were at the scene of the accident. Check on everyone to see if they are injured. Call 911 if anyone is injured. Even light dizziness needs medical attention because it could be a sign of a concussion.
3. Call the Police to the Scene
Be very cooperative, but avoid blaming others and admitting the fault. The police will objectively judge the scene and decide who is at fault.
4. Gather Information
After the accident, it is very crucial to gather as much information as possible. The type of information you will most likely need in an accident are the following:
- Drivers’ and passengers’ names
- Insurance information
- Makes and models of all vehicles involved in the accident
- Contact information of drivers and passengers
- Contact information of any eyewitnesses
- Location and approx. time of the accident
- The name and the badge number of the responding police officers
- License plate numbers
5. Document the Scene
If you have a smartphone with a camera, take pictures of everything at the accident scene. This includes: location, where on the vehicle it was hit, license plates, and any else that you would think is important to show. This will become a huge advantage during the claim process.
