Texas attorney Bob Hilliard and renowned civil rights lawyer Ben Crump – the team representing Zeke Upshaw’s mother, Jewel Upshaw —– announced the wrongful death lawsuit at a press conference Wednesday, May 30, at U.S. District Court in New York City.
Zeke Upshaw Death
On March 24, playing for the Grand Rapids Drive against the Long Island Nets, Zeke Upshaw suddenly collapsed on the court in full cardiac arrest. Incredibly, no life-saving measures were attempted… no CPR… no defibrillator. The medical team instead transported Zeke to the hospital where he died two days later without regaining consciousness. On behalf of Zeke’s mother, Hilliard and Crump are bringing legal action against the NBA, The Detroit Pistons, the Grand Rapids Drive and the Deltaplex Arena where the game was held.
Hilliard recently forced MLB’s hand about serious injuries caused by foul balls flying into the stand, prompting the MLB to mandate higher foul ball netting. Hilliard has also partnered with Crump to represent the family of Danny Ray Thomas, an unarmed black man in mental distress, who was shot and killed by a Harris County deputy sheriff.
